Normal: Boys' Town's Nicholson eyes USL

MARC STAMP, STAR Writer

National Under-20 and Boys' Town striker, Shamar Nicholson, could be heading to the United States Soccer League (USL), if all goes well, following an outstanding debut season in the local Red Stripe Premier League (RSPL).

Nicholson, a lanky attacker, scored seven goals in the recent RSPL season and was awarded Top Junior Player at the presentation ceremony at Courtleigh Auditorium last week.

He played at home in Jamaica's failed Under-20 CONCACAF World Cup qualifying bid last January. Since then, scouts who attended the game have expressed an interest in Nicholson.

"Agents have made contact about him. They saw Shamar during the CONCACAF tournament," coach of Boys' Town, Andrew Price, told STAR Sports yesterday.

"We will be sending clippings of the player to the clubs," he disclosed.

Nicholson came through the Trench Town-based club's youth system and debuted in the senior team last season as a 17-year-old schoolboy.

"He has the requisite skill set to make it as a professional player overseas - good aerial ability and clinical finishing. He works well on and off the ball," Price disclosed.

Nicholson, who turned 18 in March, attends Trench Town Comprehensive High.

"This is a big opportunity for me as I want to play professional football overseas to help my family. My father (Wayne) always wanted me to play football, but he was killed two years ago after we had just left a Premier League football game at Boys' Town," Nicholson revealed.

"I am now living with my aunt, but my mother lives in the yard. My family is big as I have three brothers and four sisters," he added.

If a contract does not work out for Nicholson, he will be eligible to represent Charlie Smith High in the upcoming Manning Cup schoolboy competition.

Trench Town and neighbouring Charlie Smith recently merged.
