Bryan, Kelly lead UWI to Intercol final
RAYMOND GRAHAM, Star Writer

Sunshine Girls Malysha Kelly and Nadine Bryan represent the University of the West Indies.

National senior players Nadine Bryan and Malysha Kelly were in rampant form on Tuesday, at the UWI netball courts, helping their team to defeat GC Foster College 42-37, in the Upper Level Inter-Collegiate Senior Level Knockout Competition.

The win saw UWI advance to today's final at GC Foster College, where they will play The Mico University College in a repeat of last year's final. On that occasion the Conrad Parkes-coached team won by a close one-point margin.

Following their morale boosting performance last Saturday, where they were victorious in the JNBS/JNA Open League competition, defeating top team Jamalco in the final, it was a very pumped up GC Foster team that turned up at the UWI court on Tuesday.

Despite starting the game without one of their ace players, Althea Byfield, the C Lloyd Walker-coached team started well and with goal attack Petal Smith on target raced to a healthy 14-10 first-quarter lead.

At the start of the second quarter UWI made a tactical move as Bryan, who started at wing attack, was switched to centre and that change seemed a positive one. Fresh off her MVP performance on the weekend at the Fastnet competition for Jamaica, in England, the veteran was in unstopplabe form as she controlled mid-court sending exquisite passes up front to goal shooter Gillene Graham and goal attack Shadian Hemmings.

Despite Byfield making a belated appearance at the start of the third quarter for the Spanish Town-based team, she was a no factor as Bryan picked-up where she left off in the first half, with goal keeper Kelly making some very important interceptions.

The Intercollegiate netball competition will come to a grand climax today as there will be three finals followed by a presentation ceremony. In the first game at 2:30 p.m., Northern Caribbean University (NCU), who stopped Shortwood Teacher's College 32-31, on Tuesday, will meet St Joseph's Teacher's College in the Junior final. At 3:30 p.m., GC Foster College, who advanced after Bethlehem Moravian College were a no-show on Tuesday, will meet Portmore Community College in the Intermediate final. The feature game, the Senior final between The Mico University College and UWI will get under way at 4:30 p.m.

Five players who represented the country at last week's Fastnet competition will be in action. For UWI it will be Bryan and Kelly while for The Mico University College it will be Vanessa Williams, Patricia McCalla and Vangalee Williams.

There will also be added incentives for the players as a squad will be selected to prepare for the World University Netball Championships in South Africa next year.
