Cabbie fights off robbers, takes their weapon |

A St Ann taxi driver is being hailed as a hero today after he disarmed one of two robbers who attempted to take his motor car yesterday. The robbers managed to escape following the inicident, but left behind a Smith and Wesson pistol and thirteen 9mm rounds of ammunition. The high drama took place in Rio Bueno, St Ann The Discovery Bay police, who are probing the matter, reported that about 3:50 p.m., the taxi operator, who plies the Discovery Bay to Trelawny route, was travelling along the roadway when he stopped to pick up two men posing as passengers. The police said upon reaching a section of the Rio Bueno main road one of the men pulled a firearm and ordered the taxi driver to stop. A struggle then ensued between the gunman and the cabbie during which the gunman was disarmed. The men eventually took control of the vehicle and tried escaping, but it crashed and they fled on foot in the area. The illegal firearm was later handed over to the police. The police say investigations continue as they try and locate the two robbers. |
