StGC captain backs Marshall for Golden Boot

St George's College's (StGC's) Manning Cup team captain Shevon Stewart is backing his teammate, Alex Marshall, to be top scorer this season and continue to lead their free-scoring charge en route to StGC's first title since 2012.

Marshall, a former Under-17 midfielder, has been in superb form with 15 goals overall.

He is also one of the competition's most-talked-about and admired players, with fancy footwork and a spider's web dribbling that has seemingly left defences pondering in his wake.

While Stewart himself has had 12 goals and Gregory Messam Jr has also scored 12, the captain admitted that Marshall is the team's tip of the attacking pyramid.

"I am a mature person. I always try to look out for my players. Alex Marshall wants to get a great goal-scoring record this season, and he even has a next year in Manning Cup, so I just want to assist him as much as I can for him to be spectacular this season," he said.

Stewart, who is in his final year, in grade 12, said he is willing to sacrifice individual glory for the team.

"As captain, any role given me, I am willing to take it up as long as it's a great chance for me to help my team. I am ready to come out and deliver for them," he said.

Marshall scored Saturday in the 5-0 drubbing of Petersfield, and Stewart said the team is happy with their form.

"Everybody wants to score, but whenever he (Marshall) is in a clear goal-scoring opportunity, we will be ready to give him," he said.

"I am very happy to know that we are through to the finals to defend our Walker Cup," said following their semi-final win over Excelsior High School recently.
