UWI floating after Portmore win

Livingston Scott, STAR Writer

Kemar Cummings, who scored the University of the West Indies (UWI) FC's first goal in local top-flight football, says spirits are high again and self-belief restored following their historic first Premier League win due to his strike against Portmore United on Sunday.

Cummings is confident UWI can push on and achieve their ambition of staying in the league this season.

However, he admitted that he did not realise the importance and the significance of his goal until afterwards.

"Before the win, we didn't get the desired result so the lads were demotivated. Portmore were the league leaders and we got the win and confidence is back up and our spirits are high and we believe we can compete with the top teams," the former St George's College Manning cup player told STAR Sports.

"In previous games, goals scored on us were first-half or early second-half, when that moment past when goals normally score on us, I told myself that if we stuck in it we might get a one opportunity," he recalled.

The midfielder is known primarily as a playmaker, but wants to improve on his goalscoring and his aim is to finish the season with at least seven.

"Personally, I have a few targets. I want to score a few more goals, as I am mostly a playmaker. I mainly assist my team but any goalscoring chance I get, I will be looking to take them with open arm as I want seven (goals) for myself," he said.

"This (first) win is a huge boost for us confidence wise, and I think we have a good chance of staying up," added the 24-year-old.
