Dance Xpressionz claims dance move

Curtis Campbell, STAR Writer

Dance Xpressionz dancer Shelly-Ann Callum is happy with the popularity of the female dance move called the Shelly Bounce. According to the director of Dance Xpressionz, Orville Hall, the move was created almost two years ago.

"We were just running some routines before we headed overseas for our dance workshops. Shelly started doing a new step and we all loved it, I jokingly called it the 'Shelly Bounce', and it stuck so we incorporated it into our routine and have been using it for almost two years," he said.

The veteran dancer also wants to set the record straight for some dancers who have changed the name of the routine to 'Bruk Back', in accordance to a song now promoted by dancehall artiste Savage.

Hall said the dance move was taught to other female dancers who changed the name. However, Shelly now wants her credit for the move.

Daily living

In a release sent to Dancers Paradise, Shelly explained: "The Shelly Bounce is a dance created by me, from Jamaica, and has gone as far as Russia and Europe. As dancers, this is our daily living. how you treat yourself and your co-workers is exactly how you will be treated".

The dancer also expressed disappointment that the name of her work was changed by her peers. She also said after speaking to the dancers in question about the issue, the necessary name modifications were not made on social media.

"After speaking to them, the video wasn't taken down or altered in terms of giving credit to us, the dance creators. Dance Xpressionz wants everyone to know the origins of the dance, and the two female dancers be aware, that the world knows that you have been deceitful," Shelly said.

Dance Xpressionz is now looking to commence the third Semester of 'Xpressive Moves' dance classes, beginning this month at Milbrook Plaza studios in Kingston.

The dance group will also be introducing piloxing as a new class in their dance lessons.
