Jobs tailored for a dressmaker |

Bjorn Burke, Star Writer Many grow up hearing the age-old adage, "the clothes make the man" which roughly translates to "people will judge you according to your mode of dress". Accordingly, there are highly skilled men (and women) who literally make clothes to provide that smart and well-put-together look. This week, THE STAR has again sought to make linkages between employers to employees in its Jobs and Careers section. Following a search of The Gleaner Classifieds for job postings, our news team reached out Donovan Moffatt, 40, at Tailored Concepts located in Ewarton, St Catherine. The classified advertisement posted by the small-scale garment-making company called for "experienced dressmakers" who are able to "cut and sew, from Linstead or adjoining areas". "I just need a dressmaker who can cut and sew. It is a small garment establishment, but now we're venturing into ladies' wear. Whatever we get to do, as long as it involves clothes, underwear, skirts, blouses, pants. Anything," Moffatt explained. By profession, a tailor is typically someone who is versed in mending clothing or making particular alterations to them to the owner's liking. While several alter and preserve clothing, there are those who specialise in designing and making new pieces entirely from scratch. It goes without saying that a tailor needs to have an eye for measuring and recommending sizes to clients based on their particular body types. It is also of major benefit for a tailor to know his way around a sewing machine. In the proprietor's estimation, it is not particularly important for someone to possess passes at the Caribbean Examination Council (CXC) level or otherwise, however, he did stress that experience and the quality of a person's work speaks for itself. "We need people with a little more experience. Most of the persons start out from early. Maybe they are not that rounded when it comes on to the education aspect, but we not pressuring anyone," he said. "We are not going to put any years' experience because I realise that somebody can sew for 15 years and their knowledge of sewing really begs to question their knowledge of sewing." Since customer interaction is key in the day-to-day affairs of a tailor, it is absolutely crucial for one to possess excellent interpersonal skills. Imagine a tailor offering his services to a client who is particularly insistent on a pink ball gown, but instead provides a black and yellow mechanic's jump suit because of his own personal preferences. It's safe to say such a tailor would run out of clients fast. Customers need to feel comfortable relating to their tailor. This is one sentiment expressed by Moffatt. "We just want to know that the person can deal with people intelligently. We wouldn't want anyone who does not know how to conduct themselves," he said, For enquiries, interested persons are invited to contact (876) 363-5571 to make further enquiries.
