Camperdown off the mark

Shayne Fairman, STAR Writer

Camperdown High recorded their first win of this year's FLOW/ISSA Manning Cup schoolboy football competition with a 2-1 win over Waterford High at the Alpha Boys football field yesterday.

Three-time Manning Cup champions Camperdown got their opening goal from Nickolai Small in the 26th minute before Tevin Shaw sent a bullet header past Waterford's goalkeeper Kristoff Rose in the 37th minute for a 2-0 half-time lead.

But while Camperdown dominated the first half, and looked likely to add more goals, it was Waterford's Tyler Dacres who scored the final goal of the half in stoppage time.

Neither team scored again in a relatively dull second half.

Camperdown's coach Christopher Bender said the final result and three points were important.

"It's more about the win than the performance," he said, adding, "we just wanted to get over the line."

Better game

Bender said Camperdown can still be group winners, as the team will reinforce and look to play a better game against Kingston College when they meet in their return game.

"As the season progresses we will get better," Bender warned.

Camperdown have retained five players from last season, where they lost to eventual winners Jamaica College in the semi-final round.

Meanwhile, Waterford's coach, Jermaine Thomas, described the defeat as 'bad.'

" The result was bad. Honestly, I am not feeling good at all because we should have got something from the game.

"My team has been getting chances from the first game and not scoring, I think it's somewhat psychological and we have to see how best we can get them to shoot and score goals," he added.
