Public backs clashing cop

Curtis Campbell, STAR Writer

Although the policeman who was caught on video clashing with a deejay has been criticised for his actions, several persons have come to the defence of the lawman, saying he did nothing wrong.

The video in question surfaced online recently with persons questioning the ethics and professionalism of the policeman as it relates to the type of lyrics and his public demeanour, while donning the Jamaica Constabulary Force's uniform.

The amateur video dubbed 'Police Clash with Civilian' has gained almost 200,000 views and 9,422 shares on Facebook alone.

While some persons objected to his actions, some viewers of the video believe the cop in question was merely bonding with the community, which is a behaviour that should be emulated by other law enforcement officers.

Citizens trust

According to one viewer, Kemoy Wallace, he respects the officer.

"I think he was actually bonding with the community and I respect that policeman. Male and female police officers should try to gain the citizens trust, which they lost countless times. Bond with the community, gain their trust, and you will get information," he posted.

Another viewer, Ryan St Valentine Silvera, believes any charges laid against the officer is baseless.

"This is just ludicrous and that's why when people see police, including myself, we get very uneasy. Because they are so rigid, the police are here to serve and protect and not to provoke or invoke fear," he posted.

Judeen Wilson, however, felt that a deejaying policeman was the least of Jamaica's concerns.

"Leave the policeman alone. Come on, it's music and he has talent and him a execute him talent. What you guys should do is go search for gunman and charge them ... they are taking innocent life for nothing," she posted.

Kirk Baadindian also echoed a similar sentiment, saying, "Leave the officer alone and focus on the corrupt ones. He's just socialising with community members. A bet if him did go kick up di selector and di promoter and confiscate the equipment, di so called high authorities wouldn't say nothing ... Big up yuhself squadie, good job, although you lose di clash," he posted.

Unconfirmed reports are that the officer is facing charges of misconduct and soliciting money and could be slapped with at least five other charges.
