Bowler grabs Windies opportunity with both hands

Now that she has earned a recall to the West Indies Women's training squad, off-spinner and all-rounder Vanessa Watts said her intention is to gain a place on the team.

A regular member of Jamaica's successful teams in recent years, Watts was recalled for the home series against Pakistan next month.

"My aim is to get as fit as possible, go out there, and show the selectors that I am capable of being in the first team," said Watts.

"It won't be easy, but I know I am capable."

Watts, a capable middle to lower order batsman as well, made her West Indies women one-day debut last year in New Zealand.

However, after claiming one for 43 off 10 overs and making 18 runs, playing in four Twenty20 internationals, she was dropped for the home series against the Kiwis last October.

Found favour

Watts, 28, was also left out of the tour of Australia in December and the ICC Women's World Cup this year.

Watts has found favour with the selectors again after returns of 13 wickets in six matches during the regional women's tournament this summer; an opportunity, the Bellas Gate, St Catherine native is grabbing with both hands.

"I told myself once I performed during the regional tournament, and the right people saw me, the possibility lies that I would have gotten a recall, and a second chance," Watts said.

"I have improved quite a lot since my debut last year. My bowling has greater control and variation, my batting is more solid while I continue to improve in the field," she said.

The St Catherine High and G.C. Foster College alumni, along with two other Jamaicans, will leave on September 30 for a training camp in St Lucia.

The other Jamaicans are newly appointed captain Stefanie Taylor and Chedean Nation.
