Don Creary, co-accused remanded

Rosheika Grant, STAR Writer

Resident Magistrate Simone Wolfe-Reece, who is presiding over the rape case involving former Jamaica Labour Party councillor Don Creary and his alleged accomplice, is concerned about the length of time before which the case was brought to court.

According to reports, the 15-year-old complainant had reported the incident to the police in March 2014, with an additional statement made on September 3. However, the matter was not brought before the court until this week.

The Head of Centre for the Investigation of Sexual Offences and Child Abuse, Superintendent of Police Enid Ross-Stewart, has been summoned to appear before the court to explain the reason for the delay in the matter being brought to the court.

Sexual touching

Forty-eight-year-old Creary is charged with rape, while his co-accused, Shaneke Williams, is charged with aiding and abetting and sexual touching.

The police reported that in 2013, Creary and Williams took the 15-year-old female complainant to an apartment in St Mary, where she was allegedly given alcoholic beverages and sexually assaulted.

Following the incident, the teen told her mother what happened, and a report was made to the police

Creary and Williams will return to the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on Monday, when Resident Magistrate Wolfe-Reece is expected to make a decision on the bail application made by Creary's lawyer, Tom Tavares-Finson.

The bail application was objected to by the prosecution.
