Classy West Ham United Academy target, Deshane Beckford, believes hard work, a hunger to succeed and a strong determination to return his beloved Rusea's High School to winning ways will be the driving factor in this year's ISSA/Flow daCosta Cup schoolboy football season.

The 17-year-old attacking midfielder, now in his third year playing daCosta Cup football, is the main man in the attacking role for his school. He says he leaves nothing to chance and is relying on his experience and technical ability to take care of business.

"I am looking for a productive season, a very good one and with so many trophies to play for, I believe we have the ability to claim a few, especially the daCosta Cup," said Beckford.

School's history

He said it will be difficult just to make the inter-zone round, but is confident that will be achieved, given the school's history in the competition and the overall experience of most of his teammates.

Rusea's will once again play out of Zone B, where they will face former champions Frome Technical, Merlene Ottey High, Cambridge High and Green Island High for a spot in the next round.

Beckford, who represented Jamaica in last year's Under-17 World Cup qualifiers and trained with West Ham earlier in the year, told STAR Sports he wants to be the top goalscorer this season, with no less than 35 goals.

Though his contract situation at the London-based West Ham is temporarily on hold, the player is keen on returning his school to the winner's circle.

"If the team plays according to how we know we can, and if the defenders hold things up at their end, I feel that we can be special this year. I will be leading the charge in front of goal and I know I am confident and with that Rusea's will do just fine," assured Beckford.

"Since I have been to England, playing football has become easier. Now I play a more tactical game and Rusea's is the beneficiary. I think it is our time again," Beckford said confidently.

"More importantly, it has also placed me in high esteem among my fellow squad members, who all see what hard work and dedication can bring. They have raised their levels also, which is why I believe we stand a good chance of bringing home the title," reasoned Beckford.

Rusea's will bow into action on Wednesday, September 16, away to Green Island.
