Blue Lagoon - A must see spot

I remember as a kid watching a movie called 'The Blue Lagoon' starring the beautiful Brooke Shields.

The movie depicted the story of two kids shipwrecked on an island and with no adults to guide them into maturity. At the time I had no idea that this barrier-breaking film was shot right here on our beautiful island of Jamaica.

Blue Lagoon is by far the most famous location in Port Antonio not only for the Academy Award-nominated film shot there, but it is rumoured that the lagoon is bottomless and may even have a dragon of some sort which resides deep within.

Now, I am not too sure about the dragon, but I can tell you the mix between fresh and salt water makes this spot a cut above the rest. If you are not the strongest swimmer I suggest you bring life jackets so you can truly experience the lagoon in it's entirety.

When you arrive at the lagoon there are a few tour guides who are ready and waiting to take you on the tour either via motor boat, kayak or bamboo raft. On this particular trip I did the bamboo rafting over to Monkey Island, a private island not too far from the lagoon's centre.

While there isn't much to see on Monkey Island it is a choice spot if you are looking somewhere romantic or private to snorkel. One thing I enjoyed on the island was reading the messages left on the bamboo and rocks, sharing in memories of those who arrived before me. But please remember if you're a foodie like me, bring a snack pack for the journey as there are no restaurants or anything for that matter on Monkey Island.

If you want to experience some of the most beautiful creations of nature, this is a place you must go. With the "bottomless" deep blue water, surrounded by trees and hilly mountains, the romantic bamboo ride across, Blue Lagoon is a must see spot whenever you visit Jamaica. Until next time, get up, get out and explore Jamaica!
