National cycling championships September 12-13

The 2015 Jamaica Cycling Federation (JCF) track championships has been set for Saturday, September 12 and Sunday, September 13 at the National Stadium cycle track.

Action for the first day is slated to get started at noon, while the final day's action gets under way at 12:30 p.m.

The meet is expected to feature some of Jamaica's finest riders, including 2014 Commonwealth Games cyclist, Marloe Rodman and former national representative Oneil Samuels.

The annual track championships include women's and men's elite, masters and junior categories and will also have an open recreational six-lap race for anyone interested in testing their skills.

Dr Wayne Palmer, head of the JCF race committee and overseer for the 2015 championships, is excited about the event as Jamaican cycling looks to return to the summit of world competitions.

"We are expecting a very exciting championship this year, as there has been a rejuvenated interest in Jamaican cycling. The championships will be a marquee event that will showcase the calibre riders we have locally and will be a great test for the various clubs and riders to contend at a competitive level. The aim is to have Jamaica represented in cycling at the 2016 Rio Olympics, and this is just another step in that direction for our riders," he said.

Jamaica has had good international success in cycling, with the ace in hand being a bronze medal performance by David Weller at the 1980 Moscow Olympic Games in the one-kilometre time-trial event.
