Cornwall College ready for title charge

Thirteen years. That is how long it has been since daCosta Cup's most successful school, Cornwall College, has lifted a title, but all that could change if things align this year.

Head coach Dr Dean Weatherly is convinced it will be so.

"Based on the experience of the team which is there now, I believe we can win the title this year," he said.

The Cornwall College squad he has available is the strongest it has been in almost a decade. Ninety-six per cent of the squad are returning players, signalling to the other title hunters their intent.

With the likes of the ultra-talented Peter-Lee Vassell and captain Jourdain Fletcher among the standout players from last year, Cornwall are being touted this year as being one of the schools with an outstanding chance to win it all.

The bulk of the squad is built around the success at the Under-16 level. That team won the national title in 2012.

According to Weatherly, the squad is confident of putting the disappointment of the past years behind them and securing Cornwall a 12th hold on the daCosta Cup, which they last held in 2001.

"It will be competitive this year and we have a good chance to go deep into the competition, based on the fact these players have matured and are more experienced. Plus, we have seen the players become more mature, which bodes well for the season," said Weatherly.
