Causes of frequent passing of urine at night

Dear Readers,

Donald is a 68-year-old man who writes from Mandeville, Manchester. He is tired and stressed out by passing urine frequently at night. He goes four to six times every night and this is affecting his sleep.

For most people, the amount of urine produced decreases at nighttime to allow most people six to eight hours of sleep without having to go to urinate. Drinking too much fluid in the evenings and at nights can cause frequent night urination. Drinking alcohol and caffeine late in the evening can also cause night urinary frequency. Other common causes of frequent night time urination include:

Bladder infection

Enlarged prostate gland

Prostate cancer

Diabetes

Chronic kidney disease

Heart failure

Certain medications such as diuretics

Sleep Apnea

Thyroid disorder

When night urine frequency becomes a problem, a physician should be consulted for a check-up, for there is usually a cause to be determined that needs to be treated.
