Judge refuses woman's application to drop assault charge

A woman who attempted to drop a case against a man who is accused of assaulting her during an argument about dirty pants was flatly denied in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's (RM) Court on Friday.

Instead RM Maxine Ellis fined the accused man, Steve Tinglin, $20,000 or 30 days' imprisonment after he initially pleaded not guilty before changing his plea.

Charged

Tinglin was charged with Assault.

The court was told that Tinglin hit the complainant in her face during the argument.

During the sitting, the complainant told RM Maxine Ellis that she did not wish to continue with the matter.

However, RM Ellis said, "How can you forgive a man that say he never hit you?"

Tinglin said, "Your honour, I said I am not guilty, but I didn't say I did not do it."

Tinglin subsequently changed his plea and was fined.

"It is not ok for men to hit women. Too much abuse going on in this country," said RM Ellis.
