$50,000 fine for stabbing goalkeeper during football game

A fight during a football game has cost a man $50,000.

Ezron Simpson will have to pay the sum to his teammate after pleading guilty to unlawful wounding in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.

Official reports are that Simpson became angry after an error by the male complainant, the goalkeeper, resulted in the opposing team scoring a goal.

The accused used a broken bottle to stab the complainant.

The complainant asked that the court not sentence Simpson harshly.

He said he only wanted compensation for medical bills incurred.

Resident Magistrate Simone Maddix told Simpson she would take the complainant's request into consideration. RM Maddix subsequently fined the accused.

Simpson will return for sentencing on October 5. He is expected to hand over the money to the complainant.
