The Jamaica Administrative Association (JAAA) named six athletes in non-traditional events for the first time to represent the country at the World Championships. The men's discus throw features Jason Morgan, Fredric Dacres, and Chad Wright, while O'dayne Richards was selected for the men's shot put. Danniel Thomas was named in the women's shot put and Salsia Slack in the women's heptathlon. Of the six, the best medal prospect is Richards in the men's shot put. He has three major titles in his career, having won the World University, Commonwealth Games, and Pan American Games titles. At the recent Pan Am Games in Toronto, Richards threw a career best and national record 21.69 metres to win gold. This mark puts Richards at number three on the world list. In the men's discus, Morgan is at number two with 68.19m, behind world leader, Piotr Malachowski of Poland with 68.29 metres and many Jamaicans are hoping that he can medal. He has, however, in the last few years, thrown well before a major championships and failed to replicate those performances. Dacres has shown in the past that when it comes to major championships, he can compete with the best, having won World Youth and World Junior titles in 2011 and 2012. Despite being at number 11 with 66.30m, Dacres will be hoping once again to take show his mettle. For the others, it will take a miracle for them to be on the podium. Wright with 65.03m is at number 24 in the men's discus, Thomas is at number 38 in the women's shot put with 17.76m, and Slack with 6141 points is at number 27 in the women's heptathlon. |
