After having refurbished the Eric Bell Tennis Centre courts, located at Picadilly Road, there are now plans to have proper lights installed at the facility to accommodate night matches.

The old courts were rundown through wear and tear over the years, and with the support of Tennis Jamaica, with financial assistance from the sport's world governing body, the International Tennis Federation (ITF), and Jamaican government agency, the Sports Development Foundation (SDF), they are now refurbished.

With that completed, Aswad Morgan, Tennis Jamaica's first vice-president, disclosed that his organisation is in the initial stages of pursuing installing lights at the centre.

"One of the things we suffer from in Jamaica is a lack of good sporting facilities. We reached a point where our facility at Eric Bell Centre was often rundown," Morgan told STAR Sports at the rededication of the courts recently.

Junior level

"We hosted a lot of tournaments here in the past, especially at the junior level, but were under pressure from the international body because we had to do a lot of patchwork on the courts and, in the past, we had to move our tournaments to other facilities, and it cost Tennis Jamaica," he shared.

Looking ahead to another phase in getting the centre to be top class, the vice-president hinted at plans to have lights there.

"Now that we have finished refurbishing the courts, they are fantastic and we modernised them with new colours, we are very happy. Now, we would love to get some lights at the facility. It is in the pipeline. We have already started talking with a few people, but are not able to make any announcement as yet. We are hoping to also get assistance again from the ITF and SDF, who have helped us in the past," Morgan, who is a former national tennis representative, concluded.
