With top contenders Francena McCorory and Sanya Richards-Ross of the United States missing, the women's 400 metres looks like a two-way battle between the Bahamas' Shaunae Miller and the USA's Allyson Felix.

The two are number one and two going into the championships.

The Bahamian is number one following her 49.92 seconds winning time at the Lausanne Diamond League meet. Felix clocked 50.05 to win at the US National Championships.

Felix, who has won multiple titles in the 200m, and who got a wild card to compete in the event in Beijing after being the Diamond League winner last year, opted for the 400m.

Felix finished a close second in the one lap event four years ago in Daegu behind Amantle Montsho of Botswana, and could see this an easier option than the half-lap race. She could end up regretting this decision as she has Miller to contend with.

A fit Miller, also blessed with good 200m speed, has a best of 22.14. being the only sub-50 second quarter miler in the field, must be confident.

The 2011 World Youth champion in Lille, France, and World junior champion from Moncton, Canada, a year before, Miller will be seeking another major title in her young career.

Two years ago, as a teenager, she finished fourth in Moscow in the 200m.

Without a doubt, Felix is one of the most talented athletes in the world and has played important roles on the USA's 4x100m and 4x400m relay teams.

Giving up the 200m for the 400m means she must be pretty confident. If she repeats her 2011 form, a personal best 49.59, she could get the better of Miller and pick up her first major 400m title.

Defending champion Christine Ohuruogu of Great Britain will be aiming to spoil the party. despite a season's best 50.82 seconds when finishing fourth at at the London Diamond League, cannot be overlooked.

She relishes the big occasion. However, this time around she is expected to fall short and will be in a battle for the bronze with Stephenie Ann McPherson and Shericka Jackson of Jamaica, who could surprise in her first senior international meet.
