Homeless woman overwhelmed by support for her family

Fortella Pickersgill is overwhelmed by the support she has been receiving since THE WEEKEND STAR highlighted the plight of her family.

Since then, Pickersgill says various social institutions have intervened.

"The child services come and say the environment was not safe for the baby so now the baby and her mother are staying at a house in downtown with the babyfather's family. I miss them, but I know it is what's best for the baby," Pickersgill said

She said the Ministry of Transport and Housing visited and are seeking to provide a long-term home, however, the process is impeded since the family does not own land titles.

The family has also been receiving assistance from people, both locally and internationally.

"A lot of people have been calling and offering help, especially for the baby. Even last night, up to three o'clock, I was getting calls. I want to say thanks to everyone who has been helping me so far. It is overwhelming," she said.

Pickersgill has been living under a tarpaulin with her two daughters and her one-year-old grandchild for the past two months.
