Weddy Weddy celebrates anniversary

Winston 'Wee Pow' Powell and the Stone Love movement were on a high during the Magnum-sponsored 11th anniversary staging of Weddy Weddy Wednesdayz at Burlington Avenue, St Andrew, recently.

Stone Love's usual suspects - Billy Slaughter, Gee Fuss, and new disc jock sensation Gugumental - were at the controls, however, guest sound system Bass Odyssey made its presence felt, too.

Stone Love has been known to give a boost to certain artitses' careers such as '90s hit-bound performers Buju Banton, Wayne Wonder, Beenie Man, and Bounty Killer, just to name a few.

Both locals and foreign nationals packed the venue to pay tribute to a sound system and a weekly party series that changed the face of dancehall. Stone Love Movement used the medium to honour those who played a role in the vibrancy of the industry.

Dancer-artiste Ding Dong was given one of the biggest awards of the night as he was presented with the Bogle award, in honour of the late Gerald 'Bogle' Levy, who was regarded as the best dancer in his era. Ding Dong and his dance crew, Ravers Clavers, were also presented with the Best Dance Move award (Syvah, Lowe Mi). Shakespear and Luggo Luggo walked away with the Male and Female Dancer of The Year awards, respectively.

Stone Love's entertainment coordinator, Juanita Sandford, was pleased to hand over the Best New Selector award to Gugumental. Also receiving awards were Chi Ching (Best New Slang, "Way Up"); Boom Boom and co-selector Harry Hype (selectors of the year); Most Improved Selector - Bumpy Cash (Portmore); and Supporter of the Year, Julius 10-Star.

The awards were sponsored by Downsound Records, Time-Out Sports Bar, Cheap Mondayz, and British Link Up Promotions. Jolly's Restaurant and Taka East Japanese Restaurant issued gift vouchers.
