|
With Jamaica celebrating Independence Day tomorrow, THE STAR took to the streets of downtown Kingston to get the views of the public. So we asked, "Do you think Jamaica would be better off as a British colony?" Robert Sparraw: We cyaa be better off under the British because all the slavery wah come in, a white man bring it in. A dem turn we against we one another. Oniel Smith: Pon the economic agenda, I feel Jamaica woulda better under the British. But to how the system a run now, the dollar a slide so fast. You know the whole country just look like it nah really go no where. Lincoln Bird: Yes. Jamaica should stay under British. These criminals (politicians) that we have here now wouldn't have the chance to rob the bulk that they're robbing. The type of rat race that they run on a daily basis, at least they would be caught easy by the British cats. All a dem (politicians) a thief. These rats a take too much. Troy Brown: Yeah, man. A better the British run this right yah now because dem people deh wah say dem inna Parliament, dem need fi jus' step down mek it come back like one time days. Mek the British control Jamaica so that the ghetto youth dem can get a chance fi success inna life because all me see the bigger heads dem a do a scrape fi demself. Nobody nah look out fi di old woman, di sick and the poor and needy. Ginger: Yes. Jamaica fi stay under di British colony because it better fi we. Jamaica can't manage itself. Me think Jamaica woulda be like how British is right now. Jamaica woulda be inna the same class too. Dem try fi go pan dem own, but dem cyaa manage it. Right now, life hard a Jamaica. Angella Martin: Not necessarily. Being independent shows that we are moving forward. Dependency is nothing good. I think the problem that we have with
independence is the abuse. We are abusing the independence. All over the world, other countries have their
independence, so why shouldn't we?
