Voicemail demands respect for dancers

Hardcore dancehall duo Voicemail believes despite strides dancing has made over the years, dancers are still not being given the respect they deserve.

The artistes have released dance songs and have collaborated with dancers for some of their top hits. They are hot items worldwide but underestimated in Jamaica.

"There are so many dancers who are touring all over the world, and are treated with the utmost respect abroad because of dances created here in the streets of Kingston but, in Jamaica, they are not highlighted enough," Qraig, one half of the duo said.

"I believe it is time for everyone to embrace the Jamaican dance culture and stop highlighting the negative elements in dancehall."

The negative elements, he explained, are the bad side of the music which are, at times, given prominence, sometimes in the media, leading to people believing dancehall is a bad thing and not making strides worldwide.

"This movement is growing and, we believe. as entertainers, it's our job to package dancehall music with the dances that compliment it and make it what it is," said Kevyn V.

"Often times people are more concerned with what they feel is wrong with dancehall, as opposed to encouraging the dancehall dance culture and turning it into possible revenue streams."

The duo's revelation come on the heels of the release of their I Wanna Dance video, directed by Di Rawtid Yute (DRY), produced by Mark Hize. The video has literally become a viral sensation with dancers from all over the world creating their renditions.

They are pleased with the response to the video. Kevyn V said: "It's really about bringing back the fun factor in dancehall and reminding fans that dancehall is really not about negativity or negative energy."

Voicemail has been going through a transitional period as Qraig and Kevyn V have launched individual careers while maintaining the group. Qraig added that they have had to address rumours about a feud but said Voicemail is a brotherhood.

"We will have our independent careers but when we get together it is always magical," he said.

Voicemail begins its promotional trail this month with campaigns lined up with newly signed PR Company, Taylor Made Events and PR Management.
