Reggae Boyz made Jamaica proud - Neita-Headley

AS the national senior football team continues to receive commendations from all quarters, Minister with Responsibility for Sports Natalie Neita-Headley has issued an early call for corporate Jamaica and other stakeholders to put their money where their mouth is and help seal Jamaica's qualification to the next World Cup.

The Reggae Boyz made history last week by becoming the first Caribbean team to play in the CONCACAF Gold Cup Finals.

They also became the first Jamaican team to beat the United States of America, en route to that final.

The Winfried Schäfer-coached Boyz lost 3-1 in the final to seven-time victors Mexico, but Neita-Headley believes it is a result of which all Jamaicans should be proud.

"I thought we (Jamaica) did extremely well, this team looked the most in sync," she said.

"I got a chance to watch the match live and I felt proud. They got the runner-up position, and it's the first time a Caribbean team would have come that close. I am extremely proud," she stressed.

Despite being beaten by Mexico in a performance that some local football experts have called lacklustre, Neita-Headley maintained that the Reggae boyz were brilliant.

"There are no buts about this one; I am very, very proud. They have made us proud. I believe that corporate Jamaica needs to come on as well as Jamaica's own national programme to encourage and support them,"she told STAR Sports.

The minister added that she believes the team has what it takes to qualify for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia from June 14-July 18.

"I think this team can make it to the World Cup," she said.
