McDonald primed for good run in Sweden |

RAYMOND GRAHAM, STAR Writer JAMAICA'S Rusheen McDonald will be hoping for a good result in tomorrow's competitive 400m in Stockholm. He will lead a trio of Jamaicans with Peter Matthews and Edino Steele - the others down to compete here. McDonald has a season's best 44.60 seconds, done at the final JAAA All-Comers meet in June. He was a close fourth at the Paris Diamond League in 44.84 seconds, one hundredth of a second behind third- place David Verburg of the United States, and will have the American to contend with here once again. Pan Am Games winner Lugelin Santos of the Dominican Republic and Machel Cedenio of Trinidad and Tobago, Verburg, and Qatar's Abdelalelah Haroun should make this event a humdinger. After a slow start, Santos seems to be peaking at the right time after picking up two medals at the World University Games in Gwangju, Korea. Cedenio, who was second to Santos in Toronto for the Pan Am silver and who has a season best of 44.36 seconds earlier in the season in Cayman, was at his best on the anchor leg for Trinidad in the 4x400m final. He ran a scorcher bringing his team from out of medal contention to the gold medal and, with such form, a low-44 or sub-44 seconds could be on the horizon. An interesting entry here is Haroun, who is the quickest in the field following his second-place finish behind Botswana's Isaac Makwali at a high-altitude meet in Switzerland, where he clocked a fast 44.27 seconds. Makwali was only able to finish fourth in London a few days ago and this result could be significant in how Haroun finishes tomorrow. |
