PAUL CLARKE, STAR Writer Western Bureau: Hanover Masters football team remain one of the most successful teams in the history of the competition, winning the Western Masters League title a remarkable 12 times, with total domination taking them to the crown eight consecutive years. They have also won the National Masters League six times, making them one of the elite teams set to participate in the inaugural Digicel Jamaica Invitational Masters Football Tournament, this Saturday at Wespow Park, home of top Premier League club Montego Bay United. Hanover Masters football team was founded in 1999, by Clive McKenzie and Nathaniel English. Both men were quite passionate about football and wanted to convene a group of like-minded individuals. The team was formed with players from western Jamaica, and featured a string of former national players thrown in. the Kenilworth football field in Sandy Bay, Hanover, became the team's home ground, allowing for the team to have achieved many successes in the years following its inception. This along with a desire for growth, saw them establishing a registered football club in August 2013. With 18 titles under their belts, they are already one of the teams to be feared in this one-day tournament and they will be keen to etch their names on this particular trophy. On the international scene, the team has participated in the Linden E Walters Memorial Soccer Annual Classics in Baltimore, Maryland, USA, and the Banks International Masters Invitational in Barbados. The team also plays charity games, memorial matches and friendly matches all over the island, as part of its contribution to society. The team's focus extends beyond just football; it is extremely active in community service. They are partners of the Lions United Football Club for approximately 13 years to execute various community service projects. |
