SHAYNE FAIRMAN, STAR Writer THE Jamaica Race Drivers Club (JRDC) will be staging an Emancipation of Speed race meet to remember when titans Doug Gore and David Summerbell Junior headline a mega Emancipation Day clash on Sunday at the Jamwest Speedway in Westmoreland. The meet is being staged against the background of Gore's return to racing, since his accident at Dover last year, while Summerbell will be racing at Jamwest for the first time. Gore expressed his readiness to take on all challengers as his car is ready for the track. Summerbell said his main aim for going to Jamwest is to get his championship points to tie up the Thundersport two categories that he is currently leading. He said that he is "expecting some challenges from the car's gearbox, which is being changed for the meet and needs to learn the track to properly, but he plans to put on a show for his fans." Other big names looking to wow a voracious Jamwest faithful followers include Peter Rae, who is looking to take a few 'checkered flags' and Peter Thompson, who returns to racing for the first time since 2012. Fraser McConnell, Vivian Mitchell, and Dean Shaw are drivers promising to put on a good show for the spectators in their 'blitzy' cars. JRDC director Silbourne Clarke said the event would be exciting. "This event was moved from Dover to Jamwest to expose the drivers to different tracks in order to improve their driving; to create activities at other venues in the island; and to attract more spectators to the sport," he said. Qualifying is scheduled to start at 9:15 a.m. There will be four motorcycle races and 10 car races in the Bracket, improved production, modified production, and thundersport categories, respectively. |
