Jamaica's rugby to be subject of documentary

Having what the sport's governing body describes as one of the most dynamic and gifted talent pools among budding players regionally, World Rugby will be here in Jamaica to shoot an exclusive documentary from today to Friday.

From this documentary, Jamaica's rugby programme is expected to receive publicity and be better positioned to attract funding and sponsorship to help it grow.

"In the Caribbean, Jamaica has definitely one of the most active junior rugby programmes. World Rugby sent a team here just to highlight the things we do, how we do it, and stuff like that," said Sheldon Jackson, president of the Jamaica Rugby Football Union.

"It is mostly for publicity, and, basically, using us for a kind of blueprint of how rugby works," he said.

"We are happy with that because our publicity will build numbers, and once our numbers increase, our funding will increase also," he explained.

Jackson described the basic, primary, and high school programmes as critical components of growing numbers.

The Jamaica Rugby Football Union will kick-start its first ever female league this September.

It will feature about five schools, and the association said it remained committed to the growth of "quality" female representation in the sport.

"Our female team is training to go to the Tobago sevens, which will be a first for us also. We are getting help out of Canada and we will be doing a fish fry on Friday to raise funds for them," the president said.
