Mexico defeat Boyz 3-1 to lift Gold Cup

Audley Boyd, Assistant Editor - Sports

PHILADELPHIA, Pennsylvania:

The Mexicans were the ones celebrating at the end of the 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup final in Philadelphia last night.

Jamaica's dream of lifting the title for the first time turned into a nightmare at the Lincoln Financial Field, as the Boyz's much vaunted defence caved in and the Mexicans won the final 3-1.

Mexico took the lead in the 31st minute when Andres Guardado sent an unstoppable shot past goalkeeper Ryan Thompson.

Then early in the second-half two horrendous defensive blunders by centre half Michael Hector led to goals from Jesus Corona (47th-minute) and Oribe Peralta, 61st.

Darren Mattocks then scored a consolation goal for Jamaica in the 80th minute. While Mexico went away with several awards, Jamaica lifted the Fair Play Trophy and will pocket US$500,000 for finishing second. Champions Mexico will pocket US$1 million.

Without creating an open shooting chance, the Reggae Boyz had a few near-misses with balls played across the goal inside the first half.

Simon Dawkins barely missed a free kick whipped in by Rodolph Austin. Seconds later, Dawkins failed to get a foot to a cross from Giles Barnes. Mexico gradually took control with Corona, having a header saved, then chipping a shot over bar.

The opening goal came shortly after a miscued goal kick. Rodolph Austin picked up a yellow card on a foul as he tried to prevent the Mexicans from breaking quickly.

The defence went to sleep as the free kick was played wide right to the unmarked Corona. He delivered to the onrushing Guardado, who guided the ball firmly past Thompson.

The second-half started disastrously and within 16 minutes, central defender Michael Hector made two horrendous mistakes that led to goals. With Mexico three up at the 61st-minute, the game was over.

At the 47th, Hector tried to dribble out of defence, lost possession to Corona who scored. Then at the 61st, Hector, unmarked, attempted to clear and the ball went behind him to Peralta, who steered the ball past Thompson.
