St James female cricketer wants to emulate WI player Taylor

Nine-year-old Gabrielle Bryan's show in the recent Jamaica Cricket Association (JCA) ScotiaBank prep school competition set her apart as a unique and exceptional talent. Now, the St James Prep student has her eyes set on going the distance and emulating her 'idol' - West Indies cricketer Stafanie Taylor.

Bryan scored two half centuries and bagged 22 wickets, thus becoming the first girl in the history of the competition to score over 50 runs. Bryan copped the MVP award for the county of Cornwall.

"I did my best in the competition; it's not hard playing against boys," she recalled.

"I am powerful. My strength is batting. I train every day except for Sunday because I want to reach the highest level," she told STAR Sports.

Next season, Bryan is hoping to focus on cricket. Her mother, Judith Simister, is confident that Gabrielle will be outstanding.

"She is very passionate about her game. The way she (Gabrielle) talks about her game would amaze you," Simister noted.

"It is very costly. Cricket gear is not cheap, and the up and about everyday is not cheap. I am hoping we get assistance with her," Simister added.

Veteran James Preparatory coach, Dwaine Humphrey, who has led that school to 17 titles in 18 seasons and 15 on the trot, described Bryan as one of a kind.

"Gabrielle is a rare talent and I knew it from day one. She was only six years-old when she impressed me," recalled Humphrey.

"I see Gabby reaching as high and as far as Stephanie Taylor. She admires Stephanie a lot, and one of my dreams is for her to meet Stafanie some day," stressed Humphrey.
