Jennifer Hudson anticipates Sumfest performance

CURTIS CAMPBELL, STAR Writer

American singer/actress Jennifer Hudson says she is excited about performing at Reggae Sumfest 2015. And, according to the R&B superstar, patrons can expect to dance the night away.

Unlike fellow artiste Yazz The Greatest, Hudson has performed in Jamaica before. However, she says the Reggae Sumfest stage is going to be a new experience.

"I'm so excited to be performing in Jamaica. Though I have been many times, I've never performed in a setting like Sumfest there. The people of Jamaica are so amazing - friendly, welcoming, supportive - so I know the energy of the crowd is going to be something special," she told The STAR.

Reggae Sumfest 2015 is dubbed the 'Summer Blockbuster' because some of the acts billed for the show have been featured in movies before. This list includes rappers Common and Yazz The Greatest, as well as Jamaican artistes Spice and Christopher Martin, who made their acting debut in the Caribbean film Destiny.

Hudson did not want to disclose too much information about her performance, except that she wants to make patrons feel good.

"It is an honour to be a part of Reggae Sumfest. This is a legendary festival, so for me to be able to share my music with the people, that is really exciting. I try to keep a bit of mystery when it comes to my upcoming performances, so all I can say is that I will have people dancing and feeling good," she said.

An established singer, Hudson has won Grammy and BET awards and has also been certified gold by the RIAA on more than one occasion for tremendous worldwide sales.

Now, she is promoting a new album called Jhud that was released in 2014. Describing the effort, she said it embodies her spirit.

"JHud was such a special body of work for me. I always felt as though it embodied my spirit and my energy, which is so important when it comes to creating. I am grateful to the wonderful response I have received to the music," she said.

Reggae Sumfest will be held in Montego Bay, St James, from July 12 to 18.
