Livingston Scott, Star Writer Jamaica's Sunshine Girls technical director, Jill McIntosh, says the team is nearly ready for the World Cup in Australia following their 56 - 31 win and 3-0 sweep of Barbados in the Supreme Venture three game series which ended at G.C.Foster yesterday. But although she admitted that there is still to work to do ahead of the championship she says there is adequate time to make those corrections and believes that once the final squad is named the players can focus on getting those 'little things' right. The players will know the final 12 by today, however, the squad will be revealed to the public at a later date. "They (team) are on their way, we still have six weeks, so the next main things is we will announce our team and then get to work, but there is always room for improvement," she said. "No,(errors won't be difficult to correct), they are just little things and once the team is more familiar with each other it will be fine," she insisted. Opening quarter Barbados started the game purposefully and made it competitive for the first part of the opening quarter. But the Sunshine Girls found their footing midway the period and dominated from thereon to end the quarter 18-7. Barbados continue to show resilience after the break, with goal keeper Shonette Azore-Bruce and goal defence Rhe-Ann Niles doing well to intercept some passes in to goal shooter Jhaneile Fowler-Reid. However, the ANZ League MVP, Fowler-Reid, soon found her spark and Azore-Bruce rarely had an answer for her after that. But Barbados kept up their intensity and produced their best quarter (16-12), against the home team since the three game series started on Friday, to trail 34-18 at half-time. The Jamaicans made a number of substitutions at the half-time break but those changes didn't affect the girls' flow, but the Bajans kept pace with them and the Girls were only able to extend their 16 goal advantage half-time by one at the end of the third quarter. However, compared to their lacklustre fourth quarter in game two, the young players played with more zest and quality this time around and dominated the visitors from the start of the final period. The Bajans could barely keep up with the young guns in this stanza, as they ran rings around their opponent to take the quarter ( 20-4 ) and the match by 25 goals. |
