Forbes stars at Junior trials

Sashalee Forbes of Holmwood Technical won the sprint double adding the Under-20 girls 200m crown to the 100m won on Saturday at the Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association National Junior Championships at the National Stadium, yesterday.

The stocky Forbes led to the finish winning in 23.71 ahead of Kimone Hines of Green Island in 24.57 and Sabrina Mason of Rusea's 24.59 on a day in stark contrast to the first day's blazing heat - rainy, with cool temperatures.

Kingston College's Shivnarine Smalling was pressed hard to the finish as he barely beat Hujaye Cornwall of St Elizabeth Technical 21.12 to 21.18 seconds in the boys Under-20 200m.

The 100m champion, Xandre Blake, of Calabar was third in 21.23.

Meanwhile, Calabar athletes claimed the top spots in the boys 400m.

Renardo Wilson won the Under-20 event in 46.31 seconds ahead of Ivan Henry in 47.56 and Demar Weller of Calabar in 47.78.

Christopher Taylor was well off his personal best 45.55 done the previous week, but produced a big run to win the Under-18 boys 400m in 46.72 ahead of his teammate Anthony Carpenter in 46.92 and Devaughn Ellington of Petersfield 47.33.

Girls equivalent

Satanya Wright of St Elizabeth Technical won the girls equivalent in 56.03 with Janiel Moore of Edwin Allen 56.82 second with Amoy Mairs of Frome in third in 57.13.

The Under-20 girls 400m was won by Papine's Candice McLeod in 54.11 and Camperdown's Dawnalee Loney second in 54.46 wikth Roneisha McGregor of Eltham third in 56.19.

St Jago's Shaniel English was easy to the line in claiming the 200m Under-18 girls race in 23.87 ahead of the Edwin Allen duo of Shellece Clarke 24.61 and Kashieka Cameron 24.62.

Michael Bentley of St Jago edged Calabar's 100m champion, Xavior Angus, to win the Under-20 boys 200m event in a time of 21.57 to Angus' 21.60 with Ashanie Smith of St Catherine third in 21.92.

The Under-18 girls 100m hurdles went to Janeek Brown, of Wolmers' Girls, the favourite, who, despite being beaten by Manchester High's Sidney Marshall in the semi-final, delivered in the final, though challenged in a tight finish, emerging winner in 13.44 seconds to Marshall's 13.46.

Daszay Freeman, also of Manchester, was third in 13.50.

Yanique Thompson of G.C. Foster College, the 2013 World Youth champion, was a class above the rest in the Under-20 girls 100m hurdles, blazing to victory in 13.42 ahead of Jeanine Williams of Immaculate 13.86 and Shanice Lewis 13.91.

Calabar's Alex Robinson felled several of the obstacles on his way to victory in the Under-18 boys' 100m hurdles in 13.93 with Kingston College's Chadrick Brown in 14.00.

Roje Jackson-Chin of St Jago battled to the finish to win the Under-20 110m hurdles in 13.62 ahead of Seanie Selvin of Calabar 13.64 and Rohan Cole of St Elizabeth Technical 13.84.

Clayton Brown of Jamaica College cleared the bar at 2.10m to win the Under-20 high jump followed by Davonne Brown of Herbert Morrison (1.95m) and Christopher Bryan of Kingston College 1.90m.
