Juniro stars set to shine

RAYMOND GRAHAM, STAR Writer

There will be 28 finals - 15 on the track and 13 in the field - on today's opening day of the two-day Supreme Venture Limited JAAA National Junior Championships inside the National Stadium as Under-18 and -20 athletes seek spots on the National team to the World Youth Championships in Cali, Colombia, from July 15-19 and the Junior Pan Am Championships, in Edmonton, Canada, from July 31 to August 2.

Following another excellent showing so far this season from the island's junior athletes, the stage is set for another two exciting days of competitive and exciting action in both age categories.

The 100 metres will take centre stage on the track with the Girl's Under-18 final set for 5:05 pm.

Outstanding

There should be a three-way battle, as St Jago High's duo of Shaniel English and Kimone Shaw will square off with the outstanding Shellece Clarke of Edwin Allen.

All three have been at it all season, and Shaw showed that she was in good form last week at the last All Comers Meet where she clocked a fast 11.52 seconds to win the youth 100m.

St Jago High athletes should also figure well in the Under-20 Girl's event, which is scheduled for five minutes later, as double sprint girls' champion Natalliah Whyte should win here with her teammate, Shanice Reid, expected to follow her home.

Among the males, it should be Calabar High athletes dominating. In the Under-18 category, Tyreke Wilson and Dejour Russell should fight to the finish, while the impressive Michael O'Hara looks a cinch for the Under-20 title.

The first final tomorrow will take place at 10:30 am, with the running of the Boys' 5000ms to be followed by the Girls' Under-20 3000m at 10:50 a.m.
