Cameron pushes incentives for sport sponsors

MARC STAMP, STAR Writer

President of the West Indies Cricket Board, (WICB) Whycliffe 'Dave' Cameron, is calling for sponsors of sports to be granted incentives such as pertains in Trinidad and Tobago.

He wants that to be done in the Caribbean in order to properly develop cricket in the region.

In Trinidad, companies which promote or sponsor sporting activities or sports persons are entitled to claim an allowance in ascertaining their chargeable profit for that income year of the actual expenditure.

"Companies who invest in sports need to get incentives. It's not only about sponsors or government. They need to give tax incentives," Cameron said.

"In the Caribbean, we all support success, but we also need support at the grass-roots level. Well, sports, heritage, culture, and entertainment are all important to the development of any nation," the Jamaican said at a Foska Oats breakfast hosted at Melbourne Cricket Club yesterday morning.

With West Indies not doing well in sports, Cameron said that, "we need support at the club level in order to grow West Indies cricket," he noted.

"My role is to represent the region, but today, it is the Tallawahs," Camron added.

Meanwhile, Phillip Ramson, director of Caribbean Foods Limited, spoke about the importance of aligning his company with sports.

"Foska Oats has a rich heritage of supporting the development of sports in Jamaica. The involvement includes fitness-related events such as the Chas E Ramson Grand Prix Road Race 2015. There is a natural synergy between Foska Oats and sports, due to the product's health benefits," Ramson said.

The company is looking forward to another eventful season of fuelling Jamaica Tallawahs in the 2015 Caribbean Premier League set to start this month. Among the Jamaica Tallawahs players presented were: André Russell, Horace Miller, Chadwick Walton, Nikita Miller, Rusty Theron, Krishmar Santokie, and Narsingh Deonarine.
