Kerr disappointed after massive error

ANTAFOGASTA, CHILE:

Jamaica goalkeeper Duwayne Kerr was a very disappointed man, after his error led to their 1-0 defeat against Paraguay in their Copa America football match at Calvo y Bascunan stadium yesterday.

Edgar Benitez scored for Paraguay at the 36th minute, capitalising on the huge blunder.

Seeking to launch a counter-attack, Paraguay midfielder Victor Caceres, sitting midway his half, hit a long pass. The ball was overhit and Kerr raced from his goal area and met the ball nearly 10 yards outside his box with a header directed straight at the forward.

Benitez reacted quickly by lifting his leg, the ball hit it, then rebounded over Kerr and beat the despairing chase of Kemar Lawrence into the empty goal.

"It caught me in two minds," Kerr said of Caceres's long pass. ":.. Maybe I should have played it to the side."

Prior to the goal, and in the first game, Kerr was outstanding and dominated his goal area well with some well judged catches. For the second time though, he and his Jamaica teammates had unhappy ending.

"I'm very disappointed because I think we worked harder today than the last game and I think we deserved something from the game. But unfortunately, we didn't get anything."

The loss left Jamaica without a point and in a must-win game against Argentina to have any chance of advancing -- as one of the two best third-place teams - to the second round. Argentina beat Uruguay 1-0 on a Sergio Aguero goal to move to four points, the same as Paraguay, who got three points from the win to add to the one they earned in a 2-2 first-match draw against Argentina. Uruguay have three points and will battle Paraguay on Saturday, the same day Jamaica play the Argentines. The top two teams from the group automatically advance to the quarter-finals.
