Bail extended for accused clothes thief

WESTERN BUREAU:

A St James man who was reportedly in possession of stolen clothes and electronics had his bail extended until June 30 in the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate's (RM) Court on Tuesday.

Osbourne Grant pleaded guilty to receiving stolen property, but later changed his plea to not guilty.

The court was told that on April 1, the complainant locked his house in Irwin Meadows, St James and left. Later that day, he returned and discovered that the house had been ransacked.

Investigations revealed clothes, including a pair of black All-Star shoes, a pair

of Timberland shoes, a red pullover and T-shirts, were missing from the complainant's house. A car radio, a computer monitor and a watch were also missing.

It is alleged that on April 28, the complainant saw Grant wearing some of the stolen clothes and alerted a nearby police officer. Grant was taken into custody, his house searched, and the missing items found.

Grant told RM Carolyn Tie that he did not steal the clothes or electronics.

"I was not the one who stole them. I received them from a guy. I did not know they were stolen," said Grant.

The arresting officer's statement was outstanding from the prosecution's case file.
