WI must improve in key areas, says Simmons

Head coach Phil Simmons has listed batting and better catching as key areas the team needs to improve on if they are to defeat Australia in the second Test starting tomorrow at Sabina Park.

The world number two ranked Australians won the first Test by nine wickets inside three days at Windsor Park, Dominica, last week.

"We need to bat properly in the first innings, as the first innings sets up everything," pointed out Simmons, who took the team through their first training session at the venue yesterday.

"If we get to 350 or 400 in the first innings, we've seen where our bowlers can keep people under pressure, and that is what we want to achieve."

The Trinidadian, who took over the team in April, and saw his charges draw 1-1 with world number five ranked England, also called on the fielders to give more support to the bowlers.

"We need to take our catches," he said.

"Australia did not drop a catch, they had their guys diving all over, and we dropped a couple of catches at crucial times."

Meanwhile, Simmons said since taking over the team, he is impressed with their work ethic, saying that he believes is only a matter time before results become consistent.

"You have to understand that given where the team is coming from, we have to climb the ladder step by step," the former West Indies opener explained.

"Sometimes, we are going to go backwards a little bit to get to where we want.

"The Grenada match (loss against England), was a backward step, and the way we batted in the first innings in the last match was a little step back.

"But the guys are working hard, and, we are continuously trying to move forward."

The West Indies has named an unchanged 14-member squad for the fixture, which is the final of a two-match series for the teams.

West Indies: Denesh Ramdin (captain), Devendra Bishoo, Jermaine Blackwood, Kraigg Brathwaite, Darren Bravo, Rajendra Chandrika, Shane Dowrich, Shannon Gabriel, Jason Holder, Shai Hope, Veerasammy Permaul, Kemar Roach, Marlon Samuels, Jerome Taylor.
