Tropical highlights battery's safety role

Among the many booth holders at last Wednesday's launch of the Jamaica Gasolene Retailers Association (JGRA) Road Safety Month in Angel's, Spanish Town, was Tropical Batteries.

It was a day that saw the Fesco service station transformed into a sea of activity.

Tropical Batteries emphasised the importance of the battery to overall safety, which is often overlooked.

"We are here to demonstrate to the motorists the need to have proper batteries and working accessories, as this sometimes save lives, " Constance Hartley, battery specialist, told STAR Auto.

He said a defective battery could cause a vehicle could shut down in traffic, which could be dangerous.

An observer outlined one scenario. "Take, for example, you are driving, the battery has been giving hints that it is to be changed and, as you reach a stoplight, it just stop," Marcus Nesbeth, a motorist, said.

Motorists were shown how to properly gauge their battery's life and to change it on time. In addition, they were also introduced Tropical products such as coolant, distilled water and windshield wash.

The day was especially dedicated to road safety, many motorists committed to doing all they can to maintain safety on the nation's roads, noting that this year's fatalities were higher than the corresponding period in 2014.

"We feel the need to partner with the JGRA to launch this project. If we all come together, then we can minimise the indiscipline on the road, " said Hugh Coore, operator of the fesco service station.

Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller lauded the JGRA for its continued drive for safety on the nation's streets.
