LIVINGSTON SCOTT, STAR Writer Sunshine Girl Vangelee Williams is confident that she will be fully fit and ready to be selected for Jamaica's squad to the Netball World Cup in Sydney, Australia, in August. Williams, who plays for the Manchester Spurs, twisted her ankle and had to be taken out of Sunday's Berger Elite League semi-final against Clarendon Gaters at the Leila Robinson Courts. Williams was assessed to have a sprained ankle, which is not expected to keep her out of action for long. "I did an X-ray and I still don't know what's wrong, so I have to wait, but based on my feeling, I am fine, but based on the doctors' assessment I don't know," Williams told STARSports. Williams was due to start physio-therapy for the injury yesterday. "Once my ankle is back to normal, I will still be up for selection and will be hoping for the best as I really want to make the team, and I am working hard to make the team," the defender added. Jamaica's Sunshine Girls are hoping to win the world title for the first time at the tournament from August 7-16. The squad will be selected following a three game series against Barbados late rthis month. "I am really excited about playing against the best countries in the world. I want to go out and do my best and make Jamaica proud of us, so we just want to go out real hard and come back victorious," Williams said. Team technical director, Jill McIntosh, who was present at the game, agreed that it will be hard to tell how long Williams will be out but does not expect this type of injury to prevent her from making the final selection. "She just rolled on her ankle and this happens in netball quite often, it's quite common. We are concerned, but injuries happen," McIntosh said. |
