JDF prepare to defend Senior Cup title

JERMAINE LANNAMAN, STAR Writer

Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) coach, Wayne Cuff, credited a second-day plan of reaching 300 as quickly as possible with the team's progress to the finals of Jamaica Cricket Association Senior Cup at Up Park Camp on Sunday.

The team progressed to the final after defeating Kingston on first innings points in their drawn game.

Resuming on 243 for four, JDF added 65 runs to stretch their tally to 308 for six before declaring.

Kingston, in reply, were bowled out for 231. The JDF, batting a second time, reached 67 for one when stumps were drawn.

"It was a good match," said Cuff. "The bowlers did their thing."

The army men were led by overnight batsmen Marlon Pinnock and captain Damian Grey.

Pinnock, who was 47 overnight, went on topscore with 85, while Grey, who resumed on 39, contributed 62.

Left-arm spinner, Paul Harrison bagged three for 62.

Kingston were undermined by the off-spin of Johnson, who claimed four for 53, and pacer Leighton Leslie, who picked up three for 50.

National youth player Abhijah Mansingh top scored with 47.

"They played better than us and deserved to win," explained Kingston manager, Nehemiah Perry.

"We, however, have a fairly young team, and this should serve them well in the future."

JDF's opponents in the final is yet to be known as the second semi-final between St Catherine CC and St Catherine CA was not played due to a protest lodged by Kensington with regards to the progress of St Catherine CA.

The teams met in a quarter-final last weekend at Ewarton Bauxite with the game ending in a no-result due to rain. Kensington, however, believe that the game should have been awarded to them due to inadequate pitch covers costing a day and a half's play.
