Bartoletta hopes to outjump the competition

United States' Brittney Reese

RAYMOND GRAHAM, STAR Writer

The United States' Tiana Bartoletta will be hoping to continue her winning ways in the women's long jump, one of three Diamond League finals on today's opening day of the two-day Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, Oregon.

The men's discus and shot put are the other two finals today.

Bartoletta is the world leader in the event following her winning leap of 6.99 metres in Doha, and she will be hoping to go over the seven-metre barrier tomorrow.

Without a doubt, she has been the best over the past two seasons. A year ago, she had the top four best jumps in the world, including 7.02 metres done in Oslo.

It has not been a great start for the talented Brittney Reese, who has produced the longest jump for the last three years after leaping to an excellent 7.25 metres in 2013 in Doha.

She will be hoping to recapture some of that form tomorrow. She has a season's best of 6.79 metres, but this will not bother her as she knows she has the potential to beat this field.

While Reese is expected to battle strongly with her American counterpart, Bartoletta, both could be upstaged by a new-kid- on-the-block, Canadian, Christobel Netty.

Netty, who finished third in Doha with 6.93 metres, showed in April that she will be a big factor as she produced a personal best of 6.98 metres to win in Walnut, California.

Here, Great Britain's Shara Proctor should not be counted out. Proctor, who has dominated the event while competing in the NCAA Championships for the University of Florida, was second at the Doha Meet with 6.95 metres and could surprise here.
