Six get big fines for electricity theft

Tears flowed freely from the faces of six persons when they appeared in the Spanish Town Resident Magistrate's Court on Tuesday, after they were ordered to pay some big fines for electricity theft.

The six persons were fined between $150,000 to $200,000 or six months' imprisonment.

Resident Magistrate (RM) Anmarie Nembhard, in handing down sentences, advised the accused that she could not allow them to break the law by constantly stealing electricity.

The RM told them that it was the same way that she had to protect them from being robbed and assaulted, she has to use the law to protect the utility company from being robbed of its investment.

Many of the accused complained that they did not have any employment and had to steal the light.
