Jermaine Gonzales

After three surgeries and a two-year absence, 400 metres national record holder Jermaine Gonzales will return to the track on Saturday at the Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association All Comers Development meet at the National Stadium.

The 30-year-old forner Tacius Golding High School star said his injury concerns are behind him and he is excited and ready to start competing again.

"Training is going good. I was supposed to run last weekend at the JAAA All Comers but I heard they didn't have the 400m, so I put it off," Gonzales explained.

"It was a long, stressful layoff, but things are back to normal."

The injury-plagued runner is in no hurry to return to his best, but insisted he wants to stay healthy for Rio.

"I am not putting myself under any pressure about times or anything. I just want to go around the track, finish healthy and take it from there, because when you have not competed for so long you have to be patient," he said.

"Things are looking good now. I am back in terms of health and fitness, so it's just to get race sharp and go out and see where I am," he continued.

Meanwhile, Gonzales said he is in no rush to compete at the World Championships in Beijing this summer.

"I have been out for more than two years, so it can't be a rush. I am up in age now and I have to pace myself. Hopefully, I make the team, but I just want to finish the season healthy.

"You will definitely see a lot of me this year. I will not promise anything big, but come the Olympics next year, I will be gearing up for that with full strength," he stated.
