Twenty-year-old accused of killing cousin

A man accused of murdering his cousin was granted bail when he appeared before the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on Thursday.

Charged with murder is 20-year-old Cleveland Yates.

Allegations are that, on the day of the incident, the accused man and the now-deceased, got into an argument at their family home.

It is reported that the now-deceased had made threats directed at the accused man's mother. It is said that the now-deceased was seen approaching Yates' mother with a cutlass as though he was going to harm her.

The now-deceased reportedly attacked Yates when he is said to have defended himself with a cutlass, inflicting wounds. The accused man's cousin subsequently succumbed to his injuries.

Yates was arrested and charged. In court, the accused was granted conditional bail, in the sum of $300,000, with one or two sureties, by Resident Magistrate Simone Wolfe-Reece.

He was ordered to report to the Lawrence Tavern Police Station on Tuesdays and Thursdays, between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m., and a stop order placed at all ports of entry. He is scheduled to return to court on June 30, pending a mention hearing.
