Man punches babymother in face for being disrespectful

Bjorn Burke, Staff Reporter

A man accused of punching a woman in the face had his bail extended when he appeared before the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on Thursday.

Charged with assault occasioning bodily harm is Orville Brown, who pleaded guilty to the offence. Allegations are that, on the day of the incident, the accused man and the female complainant, his babymother, had a dispute about clothing bought for their 10-year-old son. The argument became physical. It is reported that the woman sustained injuries to her face, which were caused by Brown.

He was subsequently arrested and charged. In court, Resident Magistrate Simone Wolfe-Reece probed the matter.

"Why did you hit her?" the sitting magistrate asked.

"She tell me something that was disrespectful," Brown began.

"She said something that you did't like? That's why you hit her?" interjected RM Wolfe-Reece, seemingly outraged.

"We had an argument before that, Your Honour," Brown replied.

"You know what is fortunate for you? Stupidity is not an offence," the sitting magistrate chided.

Brown had his bail extended. The magistrate also requested that the couple speak with the court's probation officer and arrange counselling sessions. Brown is scheduled to return to court on July 17. A fingerprint order was also made.
