Man suspected of abducting 6-y-o granted bail

The man accused of abducting six-year-old Phaedra Martin was granted bail in the sum of $150,000 in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court, Friday.

Charged with child stealing, possession of an offensive weapon and unlawful wounding is 30-year-old Sheldon Coleman, who is employed to the National Water Commission as a meter reader.

The Crown alleges that on the day of the incident, the six-year-old was walking with her father in the Kingston 13 area when the child's father was attacked and Phaedra Martin taken.

The Crown further outlined that on May 9, Coleman turned himself in with the child at the Kingston Central Police Station, accompanied by his attorney.

As part of his bail condition, Senior Resident Magistrate Judith Pusey told him, "Mr Coleman, this exciting series of events must never happen again. That is the real fly in the ointment. It is not to happen or I will take away your bail. You are not to be within 100 feet of the complainant or her usual association."

The matter has been set for mention on June 2.
