My 'Day' will come

ANDRé LOWE, Special Projects Editor - Sports

DOHA, Qatar:

Wiry Jamaican 400m athlete Christine Day does not carry the big- ticket status of others in the event, but with steady improvement over the past couple seasons, the Jamaican is looking to establish herself on the Diamond League circuit.

Day will face a tough field that includes world leader Sanya Richards-Ross, Francena McCorory, Natasha Hastings, as well as compatriots Stephenie-Ann McPherson and Novlene Williams-Mills at today's Doha Diamond League meet inside the Qatar Sports Club.

The 28-year-old Commonwealth Games bronze medallist and London 2012 Olympic relay silver medallist is eager to continue honing her craft and testing herself against the best on the planet.

"I'm always excited to compete in the Diamond League series, you get to face the best quarter-milers in the world, so to get a feel of them week in week out, you learn so much and get more comfortable running against these girls," Day told STAR Sports.

"I am working on my speed and strength and that's an area where I am lacking. I'm weak in the gym but I am getting stronger, and once I fix that, I know everything else will come together," Day added.

The athlete, who has been heavily involved in Jamaican 4x400m relay teams in recent times, has developed a reputation as being a solid relay runner.

She welcomed the success in the relays but made it clear that she is determined to make her name as a leading performer in the individual ranks.

"I don't want to be only considered a good relay runner. I love running relays but it's a team effort; it won't matter if one person split the fastest time for instance. I would prefer to be one of the top-individual quarter-milers," said Day.
